CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY AWARDS

Judges’ shortlist 2023

Tech For Safety Award

This category focuses on how digital tools have been successfully implemented on a specific AEC project/s or within an organisation to improve onsite safety. The technology should play a critical and central safety role, be that through the use of artificial intelligence, IoT, connected cameras, virtual reality, etc that can monitor people or equipment, alert to potential dangers, provide virtual rehearsals or provide data intelligence that can be used to continually improve safety. The project/initiative (or a significant milestone of the project/initiative) should be operational (i.e. not a trial) and should have been implemented within the past 24 months.

King Salman Energy Park (SPARK) Dry Port

Saudi Aramco

SPARK Dryport Project's objective is to procure and build a Dry Port located within the greater SPARK Projects area. The project has deployed multiple innovative digital solutions that promote digital transformation, improve the use of technologies and ensure the project success. The Project Control Center is one of the SPARK Dryport project team’s initiative, which is considered as a HUB of integrated solutions for monitoring all safety, environmental and construction activities, and part of Saudi Aramco’s Project Management Team’s (PMT) initiative for promoting Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE).

The Dryport project site has successfully implemented a safety solution called Smart Helmet technology to significantly improve project safety. Workers at the site are required to wear a smart safety helmet with a lightweight sensor, which is connected to a wireless mesh network installed on site to ensure full coverage. The smart helmet offers several functionalities, including fall detection, head impact detection, real-time monitoring of worker attendance and activity, a built-in heart rate monitor, real-time tracking and display of worker locations, a live head count by zone, and a supplementary evacuation alarm on the helmet. The technology has improved safety by speeding up emergency evacuations and provides performance reports to analyse gaps and track improvements.

Smart & Safe Site by IoT

Doğuş Construction

Doğuş Construction is embracing innovative technology to enhance the safety of its construction sites. The company has incorporated the Internet of Things (IoT) to create a real-time data flow, which enables them to detect and prevent potential occupational safety risks. The Smart & Safe Site by IoT technology automatically collects and integrates employee, construction equipment, and subcontractor data to estimate occupational health and safety risks. By using machine learning methods, the system analyzes Doğuş Construction's accident dataset to predict the factors that may cause an accident.

Additionally, the technology uses computer vision and image processing technologies to monitor and detect real-time OHS risks by visually capturing worker actions, processes, and physical spaces. This innovative approach improves the efficiency of the system while also reducing the risk of human error in data processing.
