Alex Small is the Digital Platforms & Innovation lead for Tata Steel UK. This role involves the development and management of market-driven digital platforms as well as the digital reach and interlock of the business through its data. Although mostly focussed on the application of digital technology, Alex’s remit also includes horizon scanning for new, innovative, products or services that could add value for product traceability, in-use performance, circular economy, digital interoperability, etc across all Tata Steel sectors of construction, automotive, engineering and packaging.

Alex represents worldsteel, EUROFER and UK steel in various digital construction standards committees and digital task groups. He is an active member of Constructing Excellence - chairing their manufacturing, technology and offsite theme group – and lead Tata Steel’s involvement with the SEISMIC project – a construction platform predominantly geared towards modular manufacturers.

Alex has been heading Tata Steel UK’s involvement in Digital Product Passports and was the founder of the Manufacturers’ Information Hub – a pan-European project to standardise and simplify manufacturers’ product information flows. Alex is a keen advocate for structured data, IoT, AI, DfMA, offsite construction and an integrated, digital, built environment.
